To be honest, I don’t remember many details about this hike—except that it was really nice. But I wanted to include at least one from Slovenia, and this one definitely deserves a spot.
The Hike
The hike starts at the far end of Lake Bohinj, a serene and crystal-clear alpine lake in northwestern Slovenia. While the area can get busy in summer, it’s still far quieter than the famous Lake Bled just a few kilometers away—and arguably even more beautiful.
Drive past the small village of Ukanc and follow a narrow road to Koča pri Savici, a restaurant and popular trailhead at around 650 meters above sea level. There's a large parking area here, making it a convenient place to start your adventure.
From here, the hike to Savica Waterfall (Slap Savica) begins. Be aware that two different trails lead to the waterfall: one to the top, and one to the base. They don’t connect, so make sure you choose the right one—we did the hike to the bottom of the falls.
The trail itself is wide and mostly shaded, weaving through the forest and running alongside a river. It’s only about 1 km with an elevation gain of 130 meters, making it a great short option even for families or beginners. The final stretch climbs steep stone stairs and offers a lovely panoramic view of the valley below.
The waterfall stays hidden until the very end, concealed by a high rock wall—then suddenly reveals itself in a dramatic double cascade. It’s definitely worth the climb, especially as a refreshing contrast to a relaxed day at the lake.
This isn’t a long or difficult hike, but it delivers in charm, scenery, and that satisfying feeling of discovering something tucked away. If you’re spending time at Lake Bohinj, this short detour is well worth it—either to start the day on a peaceful note or to wind down after swimming in the lake’s clear waters.
