An early snowshoe at La Berra

Image
🗺️  Overview Starting point: Parking of La Berra ski resort (≈1040 m) Highest point: Chalet La Berra (≈1640 m) — optional summit at 1719 m Total elevation gain: ~600 m Total distance: ~4.6 km Total time: ~2h10 Technical difficulty: Easy–Moderate (snowshoe) Download GPS file Somehow I always end up going to La Berra in winter. Located in one of the last French-speaking towns of Fribourg, La Berra is a cute little ski resort with about 20 km of ski slopes and 18 km of snowshoe trails. The hike I did starts from the very end of the parking lot of the ski resort (1040 m), where a pink start flag marks the entrance. N.B.: The path didn’t exist in my app, so the GPS file isn’t exact, even though the trail isn’t far off. From the very beginning, the route dives directly into the forest and is well marked. The least well-marked point is actually near the start, by a small iron bridge with lots of tracks leading to it. The marked path is not there—just go straigh...

The forgotten ones (Fribourg)

Image
Here one more forgotten hikes post. This time in canton Fribourg! Gastlosen, Fribourg, Switzerland Start point :  Bärghaus Gastlösen, 1550m Destination : Loop to the start Highest point : Wolfs Ort, 1915m Distance : ~11 km loop Elevation gain : ~610 m Time : ~3h Difficulty : Moderate This hike starts and finishes at Bärghaus Gastlösen (1550m). Just on the language border Jaun is the only german-speaking Gruyère commune. It features a very cool waterfall visible from the village. Short after the village you'll find the parking where you can take the chairlift up to the Berghaus. From there the aim of the hike is to go around the Gastlösen ridge. First going to Chalet du Soldat then up to Wolfs Ort pass (highest point of the hike at 1915m) and then continuing around on the other side back to the starting point.  The hike is about 10km and with a few ups and downs it totals around 600m in elevation and can be done in about 3h.  Dent de Lys (2014m), Fribourg, Switzerland...

Charmey

Image
This post includes a series of 3 hikes around Charmey. I always did them as separate ones but if you feel very very sporty you can also imagine joinging them. Gorges de Jogne Start point :  Parking near the bridge, 710m Destination : Barrage de Montsalvans, 800m Highest point : Destination Distance : ~2.1 km one way Elevation  gain : ~150 m Time : ~1h30 return Difficulty : Easy The start of this hike is in a parking that you can reach turning right just before the bridge at the bottom of the series of bends to go up to Charmey. From th ere a large path brings you to a series of galleries that makes a good start for the hike. It continues flat at first along the bed og the river with a series of bridges.  Finally you start to climb in the forest until you reach the artificial lake with its dam. It takes just 1h30 return and you find picnic tables at the end. Connecting to the next hike is possible but a bit long as it would require to go all around the lake to Charmey. Vou...

Moléson

Image
🗺️ Overview Starting point:  Moléson-sur-Gruyère funicular base station (1100 m) Highest point and destination:  2022 m Ascent time:  ~2.5 hours Difficulty:  Moderate (steep sections) Options:  Hiking trail or via ferrata (K4 or K5) Download GPS fIle Moléson is another of my classics.  I do it almost every year—it’s a perfect spring hike: long enough to train, low enough to be snow-free by mid-May, and with the added bonus of the Magic Pass cable car for a quick descent. It’s ideal for a half-day outing. The hike begins just left of the funicular station in Moléson-sur-Gruyère. A gravel road leads up through picturesque pastures dotted with alpages and cows—it looks like being in a Swiss postcard. After about 15 minutes, the road steepens significantly (it is a good training trail I said after all!). Here, you’ll see a trail sign showing two options for reaching the summit. In fact to get to the summit you have to turn around the mountain and reach it from...
